Do you know for sure where you will spend eternity?
This is the most important question in life. God says there is one. He says there are two possibilities – with Him forever or separated from Him forever in the Lake of Fire .
Many believe that God will accept you based on your personal goodness. They think you can get there by trying to have your good outweigh your bad. The problem is that God is holy and He requires perfect righteousness to enter into His presence. One small sin is an infinite offense to Him. Sin is disobeying God in thought, word, or action. Have you ever lied? Have you lusted in your heart for another person or thing (Matt. 5:28)? Even your bad thoughts are considered sinful. No one can live up to His holy perfect standard.
All of us are in the same boat. We “ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God“ (Rom. 3:23). Our sins earns for us death; “the wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). Death in the Bible always refers to separation. Our sin separates from a relationship with God. If we remain in this condition we will perish [I Thess. 1:9 “These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power…”]. We are helpless to restore the relationship; to pay the debt that we owe. But God, out of His love, provided the only way and wants us to know that we can be delivered from our fallen sinful condition [“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God (Jesus), that you may KNOW you have eternal life”… I John 5:13].
The GOOD NEWS is that God fixed the problem by sending His Son, Jesus, fully God and fully Man. [“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word (Jesus) became flesh and dwelt among us”. John 1:1, 14] Jesus died for our sins. He died in our place. He paid our sin debt so we have no debt to pay. Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and He was buried, and He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures (I Cor. 15:3, 4). His resurrection proves that He has the power over sin and death. That’s the gospel, good news.
Assurance of going to heaven is by believing that what Jesus has already done for you is sufficient. It is a one-time act of hearing (understanding the gospel) and believing it, which causes an irreversible change in your final destiny. Don’t miss heaven by trusting in anything you can do. Trying to live a good life, going to church, or any other kind of religious activity can never remove the penalty of sin nor can it provide perfect righteousness. The ‘good’ things you do can never take away the bad things you have done.
BUT THANKS BE TO GOD, Jesus made the only acceptable payment for all sin [past, present, and future]. Through His death, burial, and resurrection He offers us forgiveness, His perfect righteousness imputed to us, and life [everlasting] as a gift (Eph. 1:7; 2:8-9; II Cor. 5:21). But like any gift the gift of salvation must be received. You receive the gift of salvation by faith. Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who BELIEVES in Me has everlasting life” (John 6:47). It’s not based on anything you do, but in what Jesus has done for you. Thus, at that moment of believing the gospel, one receives everlasting life, has passed out of death into life, and will never be condemned (John 5:24).
Have you received the gift of everlasting life by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone? You can do it right now by agreeing with God that you are a condemned sinner helpless to save yourself. Then trust that Jesus (God in the flesh) did all the work necessary by paying your sin debt on the cross and being raised up bodily from the grave. At the moment of faith He imputes His perfect righteousness to you so that you can stand before God. The moment you do you are secure forever according to God’s Holy Word, the Bible. Assurance simply comes from believing in what God said is true. (I John 5:13)
